Guardian Homes - What it's all about
We don’t usually sell our retiring breeding dogs. When it comes to retirement, our girls typically are fostered by guardian homes for few years before retirement. It gives us a chance to be sure the placement is a good fit before they are done breeding at 5-6 years old.
We have lovely breeding girls ready to be placed with the right family. Dogs return to us when needed to be bred as they are still active in our ***breeding program***.
She will be living with the right family to enjoy as your own with a few conditions. The dog is gifted to the guardian family at no cost when she retires, with the understanding that if they cannot continue with the dog after retirement she returns to Lakewood Ranch to find a new home.
Become a guardianBecoming a Guardian family
Some people call it a Foster Home for a breeding dog-
but we feel guardian is a better term as it is a permanent placement.
The adoption fee is waived. And hotel fees are waived while the dog is in the program.
How the program works
In a Guardian Family arrangement, the family provides a loving home for an intact breeding prospect, that will become an active part of our breeding program. To recognize the commitment this requires, the adoption fee is waived. Guardian Families must live within a reasonable distance of Lindsay ON and be prepared to work closely with us. You will be driving to the ranch once a month to drop the girl off for a few day visit.
For Guardian Families
For the first 5 to 6 years it is a foster guardian role for the dog – you are the emotional owner and we are the legal owner. This requires you to provide a loving home for the dog and commit to providing high quality Veterinary care, feeding the specified food; free fed (grazing) diet, training it in basic commands, providing sufficient physical and mental stimulation, and making it available to us for health testing and breeding purposes. A guardianship contract will be prepared that clearly outlines each party’s responsibilities and commitments.
If you adopt a puppy: We will need you to bring the dog to visit us for two days every 8 weeks so the dog is familiar with us and our surroundings. Adult females are comfortable with us and require less frequent visits. We provide up to date shots for the age of the dog when going home. We name the guardian dogs before leaving. Names are not changeable.
For Breeding Moms
The maximum number of litters we expect from our mothers is different for every girl and they are to take place between the age of 18 months and 5 TO 6 years. You need to inform us whenever she goes into heat. When we decide to breed her, we may need to keep her for two to 18 days or more for breeding purposes. She will come to us again about 6 to 10 days before the puppies are due and stay with us until they are weaned at around five or six weeks of age and her milk is gone. We will let you know well in advance what our breeding plans are for the prospective Mothers
Retirement - Your Forever Family Pet
Once a female dog has had her final litter, the guardianship ends: the dog will be spayed by the guardian family and becomes your forever family pet.Under this kind of arrangement, expenses related to day-to-day care of the dog are your responsibility (food, annual vaccinations, general health care, toys, etc). Any expenses related to health testing for breeding purposes, breeding, whelping, and care of the puppies are our responsibility.
There is no adoption fee for the guardian family in recognition of the fact that this requires a significant commitment on your part to fulfill the breeding commitment for several years.
Doodles in Need of a Guardian Home
We select the best of our pups to join our breeding program. These future breeding prospects are placed in approved Guardian Family homes.
We are currently looking for Guardian Families for some dogs. Call for details.
How to Become a Guardian Parent
Step 1.
Send by email a description of your family unit, your home, back yard, time available and dog experience. It helps me to learn a bit more about your family.
Step 2.
If we think its a good fit, We invite you for a visit to meet potential dogs.
Step 3.
We like to meet with potential guardians twice, once at our ranch and once at your home. We ask that all family members be available for the visit at your home. The two meetings allow us to review all the commitments that come with guardianship.

A REHOMED older dog...
has to re-establish - or learn to establish new trust and re-learn new communication and new schedules - cared for adult dog. They will need to be fully integrated into the family so that they feel comfortable and settle in. A rehomed older dog is sometimes somewhat trained and sometimes have some communication skills; all based on the previous owners protocols.
This dog is an adult from our breeding program. Our dogs are kept in individual suites in our kennel and are socialized on a very regular basis with our staff or family and also people visiting as well as their children.
Our kennel dogs get along with most other dogs a variety of people they come in contact with and are very affectionate.
Our dogs have their own suite and own backyard and know to go outside to toilet by using the dog door when. When adopted/ they will require you to work out a system/ using a bell so that they can let you know when they need out. Other house training things such as staying off furniture may be something new for a kennel dog.
Like any adult dog learning the rules in your home, there is a learning curve. We prefer our retirees to go to a home where there is time for them during the day to have some companionship time; as they are not used to being by themselves all day long.
